The Telema Ensemble was formed in 2008, where Bortier hand-picked a group of highly sought after local musicians to form a dynamic and powerful ensemble. Directed by its founding member and leader Bortier, they bring to life the wonderful world of West African music to audiences from around the globe. Through their incredibly powerful and high-spirited drumming, exuberant and dynamic dances and charming traditional songs, they impact, inspire and delight audiences, creating a buzz like no other.

Telema are an impressive, well respected & vibrant performance troupe who are known for their fine performances and teaching abilities. You will be blown away by their skills, passion, sense of pride and totally infectious energy. They will make you want to sing, they will make you want to dance and we guarantee your jaw will hurt after a Telema Ensemble performance, from smiling!

Bortier also directs the Telema Ensemble in Australia. Based in Adelaide, the sister ensemble are a dynamic group of passionate Australian drummers and dancers who have spent time in Ghana immersing themselves in African culture and learning these same principles.

We really enjoyed our time with Bortier in Ghana, in a steamy location, eating spicy fish and kenke in the streets of Accra. We felt very welcome by Bortier, his family and friends. We miss the people and the music- seeing people break into dance at a passing sound and the spontaneous singing that fills the streets and local buses. Ghana lives music and dance. We spent the afternoons down by Coco Beach getting drumming lessons from Bortier the master drummer. He is a really good teacher and an amazing percussionist, and we learnt alot in the 10 days that we spent in Accra. We were also introduced to many local artists by Bortier. Together we attended a funeral ceremony where we observed African percussion as part of the ritual and attended an exclusive performance by a local Percussion Dance ensemble. We would strongly encourage anyone who has the opportunity to travel to Ghana with Bortier and African Soul, to take it. It is an experience we will never forget.
